Carol Marie Britton, age 74, of Duncanville, Texas, passed away on August 25, 2026, surrounded by the family who loved her dearly.

Carol was born on June 10, 1952, in Dallas, Texas, to her loving parents, J.E. and Mildred Hamessley. She grew up in Lancaster, Texas, alongside her four siblings. Much of her young life centered around her church home at Rolling Hills Baptist Church, where she made lifelong friends and, most importantly, accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior.

Carol attended Lancaster High School and later Arlington Baptist College.

In 1977, Carol married Stephen “Steve” Britton. Their story began in a way that always made for a good family memory—Steve sold Carol a red Chevrolet Vega. From there came a life together that would span nearly five decades.

Their early married years were filled with friends and family, watching Steve play softball, and life together in their little apartment in Oak Cliff. Carol spoke fondly of that apartment throughout her life and always remembered how much she loved their time there.

Carol and Steve eventually made their home in Duncanville in 1979, where they remained for the rest of their life together. They welcomed two daughters together, but Carol’s role as a mother actually began when she opened her heart to Steve’s two daughters from his previous marriage. She became an instant mom and embraced that role with grace and love. Together, Carol and Steve built a family of four daughters.

Just weeks before her passing, on August 10, 2026, Carol and Steve celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary.

Faith continued to be an important part of Carol’s life. The family were active members of Fairmeadows Baptist Church and later First Baptist Church of Oak Cliff. As she had throughout her life, Carol formed lasting friendships in both church families.

Carol was a homemaker for much of her young adult life, giving her the opportunity to spend her days raising her girls and running the household. As her daughters grew, she became involved with the Duncanville High School Band Boosters, supporting the girls and their shared passion for band and music.

Carol eventually began working outside the home and helped open a daycare ministry at First Baptist Church of Oak Cliff. She worked with the infants and loved each one she cared for.

Later, Carol spent more than 10 years working at Champions Cove in Duncanville. It became another special chapter of her life, filled with meaningful relationships with both residents and coworkers.

Retirement brought more time for Carol and Steve to enjoy life. She loved spending a day with Steve at WinStar or taking a day trip somewhere they had never been before. Of all their travels, their trip to Scotland and England remained a favorite. In more recent years, they also treasured road trips to St. Louis to meet and spend time with their new great-grandbabies. She also loved just being by her window with her beloved dachshund, Kearby, by her side.

But nothing brought Carol more joy than being a Mimi.

She loved spontaneous outings with the kids and the weekends when Cora and Colin would stay with her and Fluffy (Steve) while their parents worked the crazy hours that come with being a nurse and a police officer. Over the years, Mimi and Fluffy could be found at baseball games, football games, water polo matches, swim meets, band concerts, and countless other events. If you asked them to come, they showed up. That remained true until the very end.

During Carol’s final months, some of her happiest moments came when her grandchildren walked into her room. She would light up when they arrived. Mimi was entertained by coordinated dance routines, loved hearing all about Cora’s busy life, and enjoyed simply watching Colin sit in her room putting together Lego sets. And there was almost always an eye on the window, waiting to see if a bird or squirrel had stopped by the feeder.

Those ordinary moments became some of the most precious ones.

Carol is survived by her husband of 49 years, Stephen Britton; her daughters, Amy Shaw and partner Adrienne Long, Crissy Hobbs, Leslie Stogner and husband Matthew, and Robin Britton; her grandchildren, Jamie Barton and husband Aaron, Cass Hughes, Cora Stogner, and Colin Stogner; and her great-grandchildren, Sullivan and Raven Barton.

She is also survived by her brother, Gordon Hamessley and wife Dale; her sister, Pam Green; her brother-in-law, Kyle Leuty; her brother-in-law, Ernest Britton III and wife Jeannie; and her brother-in-law, Clifford Britton and wife Treasea; as well as many dearly loved nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins who each held a very special place in her heart.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents, J.E. and Mildred Hamessley; her father and mother-in-law, Ernest Jr. and Ann Britton; her granddaughter, Kylie Shaw; her siblings, Scotty Gene Hamessley and Merissa Leuty; and her niece, Ashley Glover. What a joyful reunion we know they are all having now.

Carol’s family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the countless nurses, patient care technicians, aides, physicians, and therapists who cared for her and touched her life throughout these past several months.

A special thank you goes to the staff of Heart to Heart Hospice, who helped make Carol’s final days more comfortable and gently guided her family through the process of saying goodbye.

The greatest thank you of all belongs to family and friends who dropped everything to visit, support, pray, sit beside her, and simply be present.

What a blessing it is to go through life surrounded by so many people who love you until the end.
