Hugh Mac, a man of deep Texas roots, dedication, and service, passed away on October 25, 2026, at the age of 90.
Born at home on August 11,1936 to Joy Belle (Mayberry) and Roy Denton Ashley. Hugh began his life with a simple, country upbringing in a small community outside of Canton, Texas, in a home so rural it had no street number or P.O. Box. His family later moved to Dallas, where he attended Lisbon Grade School and Adamson High School. From a young age, Hugh learned the value of hard work by riding his bicycle to deliver newspapers and prescriptions for Lisbon Pharmacy, in addition to selling ice cream from a pedal cart at the Farmer’s Market.
Hugh ultimately settled in Lancaster around 1958, the town that he would call home and build his life and legacy. It was there that he met the love of his life, Linda Sue Hancock. On November 6, 1966, they traveled to Durant, Oklahoma, alongside Billy Hugh and Rilla Ann Mulder, to be wed. Together, Hugh and Linda shared a beautiful life together and nearly 60 years of marriage.
Hugh was a hard worker with a lifelong passion for the automotive field. Early on, he worked for Johnson Brothers Chevrolet and Parish Chevrolet between 1952 and 1955. His technical skills led him to a position with Chance Vought Aircraft in Dallas from 1957 to 1959. Hugh answered the call to serve his country by joining the Texas Air National Guard in 1959 and later the Air Force Reserves. He served in the 136th Consolidated Aircraft Maintenance Squadron where he specialized as an aircraft electrical technician for C-47 Aircraft and was honorably discharged as an Airman Third Class in 1964. Following his passions, Hugh began his own journey into the auto parts industry. He soon opened an auto parts store in Lancaster, where he owned and operated J's Auto Parts for over 27 years, becoming a familiar face and a staple of the local community. Deeply dedicated to civic duty, Hugh also served his community as a volunteer firefighter with the Lancaster Volunteer Fire Department for many years and was later recognized as an honorary member. His community service also included being an active member of the Lancaster Lions Club. Each year at the Lancaster Lions Club Carnival, he would operate the cotton candy stand alongside Billy Hugh Mulder and Talmadge Bredemeyer. It became an annual tradition for fellowship and an opportunity for them to serve the community.
Later in life, one of Hugh Mac’s greatest passions was restoring his ‘55 Chevrolet with the help of his best friend Billy Hugh Mulder. He truly enjoyed going to local car shows and exhibiting his classic car that he loved so much.
He will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his dedication to his family, country and the rich history he carried with him from his rural Texas beginnings to his decades as a successful local business owner and dedicated community servant.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Linda Sue (Hancock); mother, Joy Belle (Mayberry) Flowers and stepfather Bryant; father, Roy Denton Ashley and stepmother Marcelle Shumate; brother, Don Ashley; son, Hugh Mac Ashley, Jr. and daughter-in-law, Lisa Geron Ashley.
Hugh is survived by his sister, Joyce (Flowers) Southerland and husband Billy; his son, Harlan Lowrance and wife Michelle; his daughter, Robin (Lowrance) Richie and husband Mark; his son, Robert Ashley; and his daughter, Bambi (Ashley) Smith and husband Mickey.
He is also survived by his grandchildren: Brandon Lowrance and wife Rachel, Mallory (Miller) Muth and husband Shad, Jamison Miller and wife Sydney, Connor Lowrance and wife Jenna, Cody Smith, Ty Smith, Lyndi (Ashley) McCollum and husband Matt, Logan Ashley, Melinda Ashley, Stephan Hopper, and Erika Hopper; his great-grandchildren: Karsyn & Millie Muth, Teagan & Logan Lowrance, James & Ella Lowrance, John, Deacon, Blaine, & Hank Miller, Jake Smith, Peighton Cole, Parker Webb, Tyson Webb, Maverick McCollum, Jacob Hoppers, and Madison Hoppers.
