Larry Mac Norrell was born October 21, 1938 in Dallas, TX as the son of Irby and Katie Norrell, and he died December 5, 2023. He was married to Pete Ann Norrell for almost 50 years before she preceded him in death on August 21, 2014.

Mac was a husband, dad, Poppy, brother, uncle, and friend. He was faithful to God, which he passed on to his children, and he served each church he was a member of in various leadership positions and as a teacher and leader for his Sunday School classes (the Builders in Waxahachie, the Pacesetters in Dallas, and the Share Group in Lancaster). Mac influenced and inspired thousands of students and teachers in his 42-year career with the Dallas Independent School District as an educator and principal. His service and leadership extended to his proud membership in the Sam P. Cochran Masonic Lodge #1335 and the Mike H. Thomas Masonic Lodge # 1314. Mac cherished his friends and kept us all entertained with laughs and tall tales about his glory days as a Lancaster Tiger and an East Texas State Lion. He was a meticulous groundskeeper, vegetable gardener, koi pond designer, redneck engineer, grill master, 42 player, and croquet master who went by many names, depending on how you knew him – Larry, Mac, Daddy, Poppy, Uncle Mac, Brother Norrell, Tacky Macky, Big Mac, or the Grand Poobah.

Most importantly, Mac was a gentle giant who wanted everyone to feel welcome and comfortable – his back door was literally always open. His hugs were the best, and he would do anything for someone that he cared about. Mac had a special affinity for the "littles," always trying to make them smile with duck noises, silly faces, and, in his younger days, a rousing round of "tick-tock goes the clock" or "airplane."

Mac is survived by his daughter, Kim; his son, Brian and wife, Missy; his grandchildren, Mary-Kate Miralrio-Norrell and her husband, David, and Nick Norrell. He also is survived by his siblings, Peggy Cruse, Don Norrell, Mary Cheshier, and Sue Taylor. His siblings Irby Norrell and Benja Ragsdale preceded him in death. He loved and was loved by precious brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends too numerous to list, as well as Charlsye Cason, an incredible friend and companion over the last several years. Lucky was his best buddy. He will be missed by a huge family and lifelong friends, but we are all glad we had the opportunity to know and love him and learn from him.

Family will receive friends from 5:00pm to 7:00pm on Thursday, December 14, 2023 at Byrum Funeral Home Chapel. A celebration of Mac's life will be at 10:00am on Friday, December 15, 2023 at First United Methodist Church of Waxahachie with interment at Oaklawn Cemetery of Mabank.
