Mary Matilda Hilton Fitzhugh was born December 3, 1922 in Dallas, TX to Frank Elmer and Clara Agnes (Tresp) Hilton and passed from this life on December 13, 2020 in Kemp, TX.
Mary has seen and experienced a lot in her life. She and her family endured the Great Depression. She wasn't afraid of hard work. If there was a job to be done, easy or hard, Mary buckled down and completed it. After graduating from high school at Wilmer Hutchins, Mary got on a train to Washington DC and worked at the Pentagon during World War II. Shortly after, she married Howard in 1945. Once her children were born, she very quickly became Super Mom. She was involved in every sport and extracurricular activity that all 4 of her kids were involved in. She and Howard were active members of the First Christian Church of Wilmer until they moved to Lancaster and placed their membership with First Christian Lancaster. Mary was a wonderful cook who loved doing so. More important than these, Mary was a kind hearted person who always seemed to find the positive in every one she knew.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 56 years, Howard; her granddaughter, Mary; her brother, Woodrow Henry Hilton; and her parents.
Mary is survived by her son, Larry Fitzhugh and wife Karen of Athens, TX; her daughter, Kay Hill and husband Bobby of Athens, TX; her daughter, Becky Gross and husband Burt of Combine, TX; her daughter, Sheila Nunley and husband Curtis of Combine, TX; her grandchildren, Lori Cheslock, Lisa Ford, Kelly Hill, Julie Svehlak, Jacob Fagan, Tiffany Pugh, Phillip Gross, and Tyler Nunley; and numerous great-grandchildren.
Family will receive friends from 12:00pm to 2:00pm, Thursday, December 17, 2020 at Byrum Funeral Home Chapel in Lancaster with a Celebration of Mary's life beginning at 2:00pm.
