Ruby Fay "Mammaw" Mires was born December 19, 1926 in Jacksonville, TX to Otho B. and Bonnie Mae Thompson McElyea and peacefully passed from this life on June 1, 2022 in DeSoto, TX.

On that day in December, Ruby Fay McElyea struggled for her first few breaths, but for the next 95 years, Ruby Fay Mires did it her way. Fay, as she liked to be called, left home at 16 and waitressed in Waco until she moved back to Jacksonville to live and work in a home-based hospital. Some of her most wonderful memories were of her life as a nurse.

She moved to Dallas during WW II, working at Proctor and Gamble. Her best friend, Virginia Gray, introduced Fay to her brother, Earl Mires. She liked to brag, "As soon as I saw that man, I knew I was going to marry him!" And she did on January 25, 1946.

She and Earl had a long, loving life together with their family…fishing, hunting, camping, playing games and family events. MANY heartwarming memories of birthdays, Easters, Thanksgivings, Christmases and more remain happy thoughts with our family, extended family, and friends even today.

Mam was a fantastic cook! She even authored and published her own cookbook, 'Fay's Fine Country Cookin'. Her other passions included making beautiful crocheted gifts, working challenging crossword puzzles, reading romance novels, coloring detailed pictures and watching reruns of game shows on TV.

After Earl died, her faith in God became even stronger and more important to her. She continued to enjoy the close companionship of everyone in the family until her passing.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Teenie Gray.

Fay is survived by her children, Sharon Overley and husband Gary, Gary Mires and wife Kathy, Stephen Mires and wife Cheryl; her grandchildren, Darci Gueta and husband Oscar, Zac Mires and wife Pam, Lindsey Mostler and husband James, Macey Reeves and husband Brady, Haley Del Castillo and husband Tony, and Dustin Mires; her great-grandchildren, Bailey Gueta, Kylie Gueta, Abby Reeves, Noah Mires, Myah Mires, Sebastian Del Castillo, Zoey Fay Del Castillo, and Tyler Mostler (due 8-5); her siblings, Lewie McElyea and wife Wanda, Shirley Smith and husband James; and her extended family, Janet and Buddy Coffey, Mickey Tucker, Mackensie Cody & Katelyn Tucker.

Family will receive friends from 11:00am to 12:00pm on Tuesday, June 7, 2022 at Byrum Funeral Home Chapel. A celebration of Fay's life will begin at 12:00pm in the chapel following visitation.
